Deanna Sharpe Receives Prestigious Emory University Shepard Scholarship and a Postgraduate Fulbright Scholarship to Study in the UK

Deanna Sharpe (MMUF Cohort 24) was awarded a Fulbright Postgraduate Award to study at York University in the United Kingdom. At York University, Deanna will join the Forensic Speech Science MSc program in the Department of Language and Linguistic Science.

In addition to receiving the Fulbright award, Deanna also received Emory University’s Charles E. Shepard Scholarship, which provides funding toward graduate school tuition and expenses for students pursuing a Master's or PhD. Recipients of the Shepard Award must demonstrate a superior record of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement, and personal promise, as well as other indicators of substantive intellectual accomplishment such as research awards, departmental awards, independent research, and/or publications. Deanna also demonstrated the ability to complete a graduate program ranked among the best for her discipline with distinction.

Taylor Colorado Merino Awarded 2026 Emory College Language Center Award in Arabic
Taylor Colorado Merino (MMUF Cohort 24) was awarded the Excellence in Language Studies Award in Arabic by the Emory Language Center in Spring 2026. The Excellence Award is presented to one student in each language offered at Emory College. Taylor was selected by the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies (MESAS) and recognized at the ECLC awards ceremony held in his honor.

M Egberongbe Awarded Dr. Herman L. Reese Community Service Award
The Caucus of Emory Black Alumni (CEBA) honored MMUF fellow, M Egberongbe (MMUF Cohort 24), with the Dr. Herman L. Reese Community Service Award in Spring 2026. M is one of four students selected this year who have made a significant impact on the Black community at Emory, demonstrated a strong commitment to service at Emory and in the greater Atlanta area, and exemplified character and academic excellence.

Deanna Sharpe Awarded the Center for Mind, Brain, and Culture Fellowship
Deanna Sharpe (MMUF Cohort 24) was selected as one of six scholars for Emory's Center for Mind, Brain, and Culture Fellowship (2025-2026). Her honors thesis, “Accent and Dialect Acquisition among Children with Autism Exposed to In-Home Social Language Variation," takes a sociolinguistic approach to autism research, shedding light on areas like linguistic identity and developmental pathways. In integrating these insights, she hopes to equip families, educators, and speech-language pathologists to support children in a culturally and linguistically responsive manner in the future.

Sierra Talbert Named UCLA Initiative to Study Hate Research Innovation Scholarship Recipient
Sierra Talbert (MMUF Cohort 22) was awarded the Initiative to Study Hate Research Innovation Scholarship (2025) at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is currently a PhD student in the Information Studies department at UCLA, where she researches the political, cultural, and societal dimensions of AI technologies, with a particular focus on questions of gender and race within the digital humanities and critical AI studies subfields. Her current research includes a sociotechnical, worker-centered analysis of an “accent neutralization” algorithm marketed for call center workers, and an analysis of the rapid dissemination of AI and the rhetoric of big tech executives using Du Bois’s research. Her emerging work explores new and repurposed methodologies within the digital humanities that center decoloniality.

Lynette Dixon Receives Distinguished Teaching Award

Lynette Dixon (MMUF Cohort 15), doctoral candidate in UCLA’s Department of Gender Studies, was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Assistant Award by UCLA’s Teaching and Learning Center, becoming her department’s first recipient. The award recognizes teaching assistants who advance pedagogical practices that inspire, challenge, and support all students. 

Lynette serves as her department’s Teaching Assistant Consultant. This position is held by experienced graduate students who teach a department’s pedagogy courses, imparting teaching and classroom facilitation skills to fellow graduate students.

Courtney Fitzgerald Named Junior Professional Researcher at Institute for Social Research
Courtney Fitzgerald (MMUF Cohort 23) was selected as one of six scholars in the Institute for Social Research’s 2025 Junior Professional Researcher cohort. A Beinecke Scholar and 2025 Emory graduate, Courtney’s research centers on family demography, social psychology, and intersectional inequality. As part of the program, she will work with the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) while preparing to pursue a Ph.D. in Sociology.

M Egberongbe (MMUF Cohort 24) was named one of two recipients of the Rudolph P. Byrd Memorial Scholarship in Spring 2025. This award honors Emory College rising seniors who demonstrate outstanding leadership in addressing social, political, cultural, and professional issues within the African American community at Emory.

Celeste Lee Awarded ACLS HBCU Faculty Fellowship

Celeste Lee (MMUF Cohort 1) was awarded an ACLS HBCU Faculty Fellowship in Spring 2025, one of only eight scholars selected nationally for this prestigious honor. Celeste is an assistant professor at Spelman College, and her project, "Racial Bias and Black Maternal Health: An Examination of Nurses' Knowledge and Perspectives," explores the impact of racial bias on maternal healthcare and seeks to deepen understanding of the challenges faced by Black mothers.

Courtney Fitzgerald Awarded Prestigious Beinecke Scholarship

Courtney Fitzgerald (MMUF Cohort 23) was awarded the prestigious Beinecke Scholarship, recognizing her exceptional academic achievements and commitment to graduate study. Her research explores Black lesbian identity, examining its cultural and historical significance. This scholarship will support Courtney’s future doctoral studies, where she aims to further her scholarship on race, gender, and sexuality while contributing to broader conversations in the humanities.

Christian Ballard Named Inaugural Carol Anderson Intern at Bloomsbury Publishing
Christian Ballard (MMUF Cohort 23) was selected as the first-ever Carol Anderson Intern for Bloomsbury Publishing House in Spring 2024. This prestigious role aligns with Christian’s passion for archival research and cultural and historical scholarship. In addition to developing expertise in publishing, Christian hopes to integrate this experience into his future work as a scholar and educator, furthering his commitment to preserving and amplifying underrepresented histories.

Casidy Campbell Awarded Schomburg Center Summer Research Fellowship
Casidy Campbell (MMUF Cohort 14) was awarded the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture Summer Research Fellowship in Spring 2015. This prestigious fellowship allowed Casidy to conduct in-depth research at one of the world’s leading institutions for Black cultural studies, furthering her scholarly work in African American history and culture. The experience deepened her research skills and commitment to preserving and amplifying Black narratives.
