Fellow Obligations & Benefits


Students accepted to the MMUF must fulfill these obligations to remain in the program and receive ongoing benefits.

Fellow Obligations

  1. Attend Emory's 4-wk Rudolph P. Byrd Summer Institute held in June.
  2. Attend monthly meetings with coordinators and graduate mentors.
  3. Attend regular semester advisory meetings with mentor and coordinators.
  4. Attend the annual MMUF Southeast Regional Conference and deliver research presentations.
  5. Annually update MMUF Fellow/Alumni Profile at the National Mellon Foundation's website.
  6. Juniors must submit a budget plan and proposal to receive their summer funding award.
  7. Seniors must submit a 35-page research paper to complete the MMUF.
  8. Have and maintain a 3.2 minimum GPA (3.5+ is preferred for admission into a reputable doctoral program).

Program Benefits

  • $4,000 stipend/yr ($2,000 per semester) for conducting and producing a research project.
  • $4,500 summer stipend for research project development.
  • Up to $1,000 in GRE preparatory support to cover courses and materials (seniors year).
  • Up to $300 in supplemental funding for graduate application fees (seniors year).
  • Up to $800/yr in funding from the MMUF Scholar Development Fund for professional development, additional research support, and conference travel.
  • Receive ongoing mentoring, research support, and professional guidance from faculty members, coordinators, and graduate students.
  • Up to $10,000 in loan repayment funding upon entering and completing a doctoral program*.
